Depression is a medical illness that affects a persons emotions, behavior, and thoughts. It is more than just a feeling of sadness for a few days. If you are one of the more than 20 million individuals in the United States who has depression, the feeling never subsides. Depression can lead to emotional and physical issues. Typically, people with depression find it hard to go about their day-to-day activities, and may also feel like their life is not worth living. It can also affect those around you as well. It is hard to say how many people are affected by depression. However, experts say depression is most common is women between the ages of 15 and 30. Therefore, 70 percent of women are more likely to develop depressive symptoms throughout their lifetime than men. The two most common forms of depression are major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder. Major depressive disorder is otherwise known as major depression.
